Calera
Sellick
Vineyard
Mt.
Harlan Pinot Noir
Calera
was founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, who worked two
consecutive harvests in Burgundy — 1970 at the Domaine
de la Romanee-Conti, and 1971 at Domaine Dujac.
He also worked the 1970 harvest at Chateau-Grillet
in the northern Rhone Valley.
After
a two year search for limestone-derived soil in California,
Jensen located and purchased a rugged, remote
property with a large limestone deposit near Hollister
in the Gavilan Mountains of San Benito County. It is
90 miles south of San Francisco, 12 miles south of the
town of Hollister, and 25 miles inland from the Pacific
Ocean. In 1975, he planted the three
original Pinot Noir vineyards on Mt. Harlan, which he
called Selleck, Reed and Jensen.

"Just
a baby now, with all the promise and potential
of young, well-made Pinot. Delicate flavors,
with some
power lurking beneath the surface. Raspberry, blackberry,
mocha, vanilla, warm spices and more. Tempting now,
but will certainly gain in complexity with aging." -
Splurge Wine, 10/05
"Spicy
and earthy, with hints of underbrush and stems, it
is a Burgundian-styled Pinot with brooding richness
and impressive potential, but it requires coaxing from
the glass. There is plenty here, but it will benefit
from aging. 90+ points." - Robert Parker, The
Wine Advocate
