Below
is the October, 2006 Featured Wine for the Wines
by Jennifer Cellar Club:
2003
de Trafford
Cabernet
Sauvignon
Stellenbosch,
South Africa
De
Trafford Winery is situated on the beautiful Mont
Fleur farm set at the top of a dramatic valley above
Stellenbosch. The history of wine growing on this
mountain farm started with the purchase of the property
in 1976 by the Trafford family as inaccessible grazing
land.
However,
many of these high altitude slopes were deemed suitable
for high quality red grape varieties, so in 1983
a small vineyard was established to produce experimental
wines - consumed by family and friends! These were
their learning curve years (1984 - 1991), which included
lots of help and advice from local winemakers and
working experience in France, particularly in the
Bordeaux area.
De
Trafford wines vary in their tasting qualities,
but they have a distinctive personality - intensely
flavored and finely structured with great length
and finesse. These are naturally made, living wines
which will deposit a sediment - a healthy sign
of a handcrafted wine.
The
growing and ripening period for this vintage was
nearly perfect. A light irrigation at veraison ensured
the grapes got through the late, warm, dry summer
without too much stress. The wines have intense fruit,
excellent structure and great maturation potential.
Deep, dark, brooding red color. Cassis, ripe mulberries,
tobacco and cedar nose. Intense fruit flavors and
firm, persistent tannins follow through to a long,
dry finish. Probably best between 2008 – 2018. Enjoy
with classic meat dishes.
