is very much a family affair and they are pioneers
of the area, seeing the potential long before those
followed. Mike Tiller, as an Air New Zealand pilot, had
the distinct advantage of having an almost daily aerial
view of the beautiful Wairau Valley in Marlborough, and
hence the opportunity to identify the optimum sites for
entire estate is hand-pruned and -picked, which is
no longer the norm in the region. Vine
density is almost twice the average here, and yields
are restricted by pruning to low bud numbers. Sustainable
viticultural practices maintain
vineyard health and soil nutrition using a combination
of mulching and organic fish-based fertilizer. These
factors no doubt contribute to the wonderful
natural intensity and concentration of flavor that
the distinctive hallmark of the wines, all of which
are 100% Estate grown and produced.
2008 vintage is a truly magical expression of Pinot
Noir. Aromas of cherries, plum and exotic spices
waft from the glass. On the palate, the wine delivers
intense flavor, yet with appropriate elegance and delicacy.
This wine has years ahead of it, but is also drinking
beautifully right now.
