The
Jumilla Designation of Origin (D.O. Vinos de
Jumilla) was created in 1966. The wines are carefully
prepared in its seven towns located in the southeast
of Spain. Today the town of Jumilla,
previously
known as Gémina, is the hub of the D.O.,
with 50% of the wine industry and almost all of the
area’s bottling plants.
A late phylloxera
attack in 1989 led to a fresh start throughout Jumilla:
the vineyards were replanted to produce lighter but
still
fruity
red, white and rosé wines made from native
grape varieties, particularly Monastrell. Because
of its ability to endure the cold winters and
hot, dry summers, Monastrell has become
Jumilla's signature
red grape, representing a full 80% of plantings.
The
2007 Gémina Monastrell is produced
with very old Monastrell pre-phylloxera vines harvested
at their optimum point of maturity, and
is aged three months in American and French new oak
barrels. The result is a wine of dark ruby color,
with a bouquet of cedar, mineral, plum, and blueberry.
Forward and sweet on the palate,
the wine has structure, ripe
blue fruit flavors, and a lengthy, pure
finish.
Enjoy now through 2014.
