by Jennifer Wine Club.
White
Wine
2005
Bodegas Cerrosol
Verdejo
Rueda,
Spain
In
1997, José María Vegas founded Bodegas
y Viñedos Vega Real, a winery dedicated to
the production of quality wines from the Ribera del
Duero D.O.
Recently,
seeking to capitalize on the increasing quality
that the wines of Rueda were showing,
the winery decided to market white wines from the
D.O. Rueda. The family winery of Bodegas
Cerrosol was chosen for this venture.
The
winery is located
in Castilla y León, a
privileged area not only because of its
location, but because it is also surrounded by
old Verdejo grape
vineyards. The founder's
philosophy has been to craft wines sourced from these
old vineyards using the
most current technology and wine making methods
in order to obtain
the maximum potential from the Verdejo grape which
is so prevalent in this area.
The
winery sources all the fruit from the surrounding
village's vineyards, mostly from small plots of less
than three hectares each. Bodegas
Cerrosol is now the leading wine producer in
the Rueda D.O. with 3.5 millions liters annually.
This
wine is green-yellow, clean and bright. Very intense
on the nose,
where tropical fruits predominate
over a floral background with memories of lime and
camomile. Round, soft and unctuous on the palate,
with an elegant and persistent finish.

Red
Wine
2004 Hedges CMS Red
Cabernet
Sauvignon - Merlot - Syrah
Columbia
Valley, Washington State
Aromas of toasted oak, butterscotch, black licorice,
clove spice, and dark fruit. On the palate, raspberry
and blackberry with toasted oak, vanilla, clove,
and hints of caramel and cassis. Firm but balanced
tannins, medium-plus body, fruit and vanilla sweetness,
nice acidity and a long finish.
The pleasing, soft, fruit-forward entry of this wine
makes it drinkable now but the darker, richer fruit,
acidity and firm but balanced tannins, in addition
to the large percentage of Red Mountain grapes used
in
the blend, should make this wine one that will improve
over the next two to five years.
Grapes come from the Yakima Valley Vineyards of O’Brien
and Willard, the Horse Heaven vineyard Destiny Ridge,
the Columbia Valley vineyards of Bacchus, Weinbau and
Sagemoor (all part of Sagemoor Farms) and Goose Ridge
and the Red Mountain Vineyards of Bel Villa, Hedges
and RMV (21% Red Mountain total). About 80% French
oak and 20% American oak, with some lots stored for
up to one year in barrels.
The blend is 39% Cabernet, 57% Merlot, and 4% Syrah.
