Mercedes Eguren Sauvignon
Blanc
Bodegas Heredad Ugarte Vino
de la Tierra de Castilla, Spain

Don
Amancio Ugarte started wine production in
1870 and in 1957 his grandson, Anastasio Jesús
Victorino Eguren Ugarte (Victorino), founded
Bodegas Heredad Ugarte, building a new winery in the
Rioja
Alavesa town of Laguardia in 1989. The Mercedes
Eguren line is named for one of his
two daughters, both of who play an active
role in the family business.
This
100% Sauvignon Blanc is crafted with fruit purchased
from the La Mancha vineyard of Amaneceris and is the
first non-Spanish
grape varietal produced by Bodegas
Heredad
Ugarte. It
has an attractive pale color, with a nose full of tropical
fruit, particularly pineapple and mango, along
with macerated, aromatic herbs and syrup. The palate
is potent and dry, maintaining
perfect balance
between fruit and alcohol, with a gentle, rounded finish.

Powers Winery Cab/Merlot
Columbia
Valley, Washington
Columbia
Valley's Powers Winery has been recognized by such
notables as the Wine Spectator, which has referred
to the
winery
as a "rising star," and the Wine Enthusiast,
which recently named them as one of the "50
Great U.S. Cabernet Producers."
Bill Powers was named 1996 Washington Wine Grape Grower
of the Year, an award bestowed upon him by
his colleagues for his progressive techniques and excellent
recovery
of the vineyard after the devastating freeze in the
winter of 1996.
In 1990, Powers Winery's sister estate, Badger Mountain
Vineyard, became the first Certified Organic Vineyard
in Washington
State.
The wine
is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot.
On the nose, it shows layers of lush, black cherry,
sweet plum, blackberries, wood
spice,
vanilla,
and a touch of cocoa. The flavors
are consistent with the aromas, having sweet cherry,
Marionberry, and mocha balancing a nice, spicy oak
component. The round, balanced mouthfeel provides
a richness that lasts
into the long finish of lush fruit and wood.
