Columbia Gorge AVA (American Viticultural Area) was
approved in 2004, and
just like the Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley
AVAs, it includes vineyards in
both Oregon and Washington. The area is noted not only
for its amazing beauty - the Gorge is where the Columbia
literally cuts through the Cascades in breathtaking
but also for its diversity of climates and growing
conditions, allowing for a broad range of grapes and
the Oregon side, Phelps
Creek Vineyards is deservedly beginning to receive
not only regional but
unoaked Chardonnay is a beautifully clean expression
of the varietal. The perfumed apple and toast aromas
are light and inviting. Mouth-filling
flavors of ripe apple, gentle lemon,
and juicy peach are elegantly understated, yet
forward enough to invite repeated sips. A light dusting of toast overlays the
fruit, and background minerality adds complexity.

Simonsberg Ward takes its name from its primary geographical
feature, Simonsberg Mountain, which nicely separates
the Stellenbosch and Paarl wine districts, much as
the Mayacamas mountains separate California's Napa
and Sonoma counties.

and 25 km from Paarl on the R44, the 2007 Fantail Pinotage
is a rich, purple colored wine. The nose shows lovely
black cherry flavors and plums. The palate is beautifully
soft, with touch of spice and has a lingering finish.
