Below are the May, 2010 Featured Wines for the Wines by Jennifer Wine Club.

White Wine

Phelps Creek Vineyards

2008 Unoaked Chardonnay

Columbia Gorge AVA

Phelps Creek Vineyards 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay

The Columbia Gorge AVA (American Viticultural Area) was officially approved in 2004, and just like the Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley AVAs, it includes vineyards in both Oregon and Washington. The area is noted not only for its amazing beauty - the Gorge is where the Columbia River literally cuts through the Cascades in breathtaking fashion - but also for its diversity of climates and growing conditions, allowing for a broad range of grapes and styles.

Located on the Oregon side, Phelps Creek Vineyards is deservedly beginning to receive not only regional but national attention and accolades.

Their unoaked Chardonnay is a beautifully clean expression of the varietal. The perfumed apple and toast aromas are light and inviting. Mouth-filling flavors of ripe apple, gentle lemon, and juicy peach are elegantly understated, yet just forward enough to invite repeated sips. A light dusting of toast overlays the fruit, and background minerality adds complexity. Beautifully balanced with bright acidity and restrained fruitiness.

Serve with hazelnut-crusted trout.

Red Wine

2007 Fantail Pinotage

Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, South Africa

2007 Fantail PinotageThe Simonsberg Ward takes its name from its primary geographical feature, Simonsberg Mountain, which nicely separates the Stellenbosch and Paarl wine districts, much as the Mayacamas mountains separate California's Napa and Sonoma counties.

Produced and bottled on Morgenhof Wine Estate, 4 km from Stellenbosch and 25 km from Paarl on the R44, the 2007 Fantail Pinotage is a rich, purple colored wine. The nose shows lovely black cherry flavors and plums. The palate is beautifully soft, with touch of spice and has a lingering finish.

This wine will go extremely well with sweet & sour pork, or oriental style dishes.
