2009 Plantagenet

Dry Riesling

2009 Plantagenet RieslingIn 1968, English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the English royal house of Plantagenet, invested in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire. He first planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Riesling three years later.

The first release from these young vines in 1974 yielded wines that were tight and lean, but even then they showed the elegant spice and fruit characters that have become the hallmark of Great Southern. These same characteristics recently prompted noted Australian wine reviewer James Halliday to express his enjoyment of Plantagenet's 2009 Great Southern Riesling by rating it with 94 fabulous points.

Complex aromatics of spicy green apples with minerally slate and lemon rind notes. Finishing with a firm acidity which carries the length of the palate but balanced by the depth of fruit. Strong citrus flavors with a spicy edge and a long finish.

2009 Bodega Palacios Remondo

"La Vendimia"

Rioja, Spain

 

2009 "La Vendimia" Following his great successes in Priorato (the flagship wine he produces there, L’Ermita, is widely considered one of the most important Spanish wines) and Bierzo during the 1990's, and the death of his father in 2000, superstar winemaker Alvaro Palacios assumed responsibility for the family’s property and winery in Rioja.

Palacios wasted no time in redefining the historic estate’s winemaking and viticultural practices. He lowered grape yields dramatically with the goal of creating far superior wines from the vineyards his father had planted in the 1980's, and other selected mature vineyards.

La Vendimia is a 50/50 blend of Spain’s two original star varieties, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Lively and bright crimson in color, this wine has soft aromas of rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, fresh orchard fruit, and hints of orange rind. Currants, Bing cherries, fresh nectarines, plums and a hint of wild fennel are expressed on the palate.

Drinking beautifully now but sure to develop complexity over the next 3 - 4 years. Pair with the "Kalamata Olive Tapenade" featured in our Wines by Jennifer Cookbook.
