Featured Wine

Below are the June, 2012 Featured Wines for the Wines by Jennifer Wine Club:

White Wine

2010 Graf Hardegg

"Veltlinsky" Grüner Veltliner

Weinviertel, Austria

2010 Graf Hardegg "Veltlinsky" Gruner Veltliner

The Graf Hardegg estate is situated on the northern border of Austria’s largest and oldest wine region, Weinviertel (“wine district”), 75 km north of Vienna near the Czech border. The climate here is continental, resulting in warm, dry summers and cold, harsh winters.

The estate has a history of winemaking dating back to the Middle Ages, and all vineyards of the winery are operated organically, supplemented by biodynamic and homeopathic preparations.

Prototypical Grüner Veltliner from the northern Weinviertel, it shows a fresh nose of apple and hay with elegant citrus aromas. Fermented slowly in 100% stainless steel tanks, the wine aged sur lie for several months to build its elegant style, resulting in large amounts of creamy apple fruit on the palate.

Spicy and inspiring, this is a pleasant everyday wine which would be a perfect pairing for the "Iowa Hot Artichoke Dip" from our Wines by Jennifer Cookbook!

Red Wine

2008 Villa San-Juliette Merlot

Paso Robles, California

2008 Villa San-Juliette Merlot

The story begins with a reality show called “Corkscrewed: The Wrath of Grapes” starring Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, which followed their trials and tribulations of acquiring and building the beautiful 168-acre vineyard in Paso Robles that has become Villa San-Juliette.

Decorated winemaker Adam LaZarre runs the operation here, and Merlot is a passion for him. When in the right terroir, Merlot can be layered and full-bodied with wonderful fruit flavors, and this estate produces some of the best Merlot in California.

With 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Tempranillo blended in, the wine is like a dark, chocolate-covered cherry with layers of cedar, tobacco, coffee, and a whiff of dried herbs. Plum and other dark red fruits in the mouth, with dense, melting tannins that provide for serious depth from 14 months spent in new and neutral French oak. The acid pops just at the back end and carries the flavors well into the back of the mouth.
