The Russian River appellation is best known for its
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but 9% of its vineyard acreage
is planted to Zinfandel. The cool climate that makes
Russian River so unique also has significant impact
on Zinfandel, producing a style that has greater natural
acidity, freshness, and finesse than Zinfandels from
This wine has a soft, sweet nose—initially very jammy
with black raspberry fruit, and then unfolding with
notes of cedar, pencil shavings, and an array of earthy
spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and clove.
The American oak is finely integrated into the powerfully
ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit profile, providing
structure and complementing the Zinfandel character.
