Featured Wine

Below are the July, 2016 Featured Wines for the Wines by Jennifer Wine Club:

White Wine

Backsberg Estate Cellars

“Black Label” Brut MCC

Elgin/Paarl, South Africa

Backsberg Estate Cellars “Black Label” Brut MCC

MCC is shorthand for “Methode Cap Classique,” which is the South African term for sparkling wine produced using the traditional, bottle-fermentation technique. We were introduced to this wine by 5th-generation owner Simon Back at the family's winery in Paarl in January, and are now pleased to share the “fruits” of our discovery with our Wines by Jennifer® Wine Club!

A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the wine is aged for 12 months before disgorging. Pale golden color with straw, apple orchard and peach aromas, with a hint of strawberry from the Pinot. Light, toasted biscuit flavors and a mouthfilling mousse are complemented by green apple, pear and light citrus notes on the long and satisfying finish.

Enjoy now or over the next five years with the “Baked Clams” recipe from our Wines by Jennifer Cookbook!

Red Wine

Johannes Zillinger

“Reflexion” Sankt Laurent

Niederösterreich, Austria

Johannes Zillinger “Reflexion” Sankt LaurentDemeter-certified biodynamic winery Johannes Zillinger has a history that extends over 350 years. They were one of the pioneers of organic winegrowing in Austria, having converted to fully organic production in 1984.

Despite its reputation as a difficult grape, Sankt Laurent is the third-most popular red variety in Austria, but represents only 4% of total plantings at Zillinger. It was named after St. Lawrence Day (August 10th), the day when the grapes typically begin to change color.

This flagship “Reflexion” wine is single-vineyard, with fruit coming entirely from Steinthal, their oldest estate vineyard first mentioned in written history in 1520. The wine delivers dark, red fruit aromas and flavors of morello cherry, underpinned by a sturdy, earthy structure that suggests good aging potential. Enjoy now or over the next 4 - 5 years with the “Chicken Spedini” recipe from our Wines by Jennifer Cookbook!
