About Us

Wines by Jennifer® has become a truly fun and unique Kansas City entertainment destination, and two of the biggest secrets to our success are the beautiful facility we've built, along with the talented Team we've assembled to serve you. We invite you to spend a few minutes to learn more about each of them:

Our Facility

Wines by JenniferOur circa 1903 house located in the quaint, historical Parkville, Missouri Old Town District, has been designed in a way not typically available to traditional retail shops.

Each room in this totally-restored historic house has been uniquely decorated to represent the major wine regions from around the world: Spain and Portugal; Italy; France; Australia and New Zealand; Germany and Austria; Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina; South Africa; Eastern Europe; the Middle East; and the United States are among the regions represented. These themed rooms are filled with wines, wine maps, authentic wine making equipment and wine-related products from the particular regions, and are designed in such a way that you feel as if you're actually tasting in the wine region of your choice.

Along with the themed rooms and our unique Tasting Room, our lower level Art Gallery is beautifully decorated with works of art contributed by the finest artists the Midwest has to offer. Choose from the several intimate seating areas available and enjoy fine wine and food amidst fine art.

On nicer days, our guests relax on the front porch with its leafy view of Parkville's Main Street; on one of the shop’s many balconies with their picturesque views of Park University; or in the outdoor wine garden, complete with fountains, greenery, and ample private seating.

Baby Grand Piano at Wines by Jennifer

In inclement weather, our guests often gravitate to the upper level at Wines by Jennifer®, where our baby grand piano awaits. Enjoy the occasional live music event, or hop in and impress your friends by tickling the ivories yourself.

In short, good weather or bad, large party or small, Wines by Jennifer's spacious and unique facility offers something for everyone!

Dear Jennifer,

On behalf of the Junior Women's Symphony Alliance, I would like to thank you and your staff for putting together a wonderful evening for us. The food was delicious and the featured "West Coast Wines" were divine! We all enjoyed the unique ambiance of your establishment and had a great evening!

Our Team

Jennifer Stanton
Jennifer Stanton

Jennifer is the founder and proprietor of Wines by Jennifer®. In her previous life in corporate America, she spent many a night flying herself to bed-and-breakfast inns across the country, and always dreamed of owning one someday. She pictured an inn with each of the rooms themed after different countries of the world - sound familiar?

Kurt Breeding
Kurt Breeding

Kurt brings impressive food and beverage expertise to Wines by Jennifer®, initially gained by time spent with a good friend who was a restauranteur.

Proud parents of two young adult children, he and wife Tracie have also long had the travel bug. They always try to incorporate wine and beer tourism while on the road, and one of Kurt's very favorite memories is of stumbling upon a wine festival in the Swiss Riviera town of Vevey and touring the amazing centuries-old vineyards that frame Lake Geneva.

In addition to his wine and spirits background, as a Boulevard alumnus and long-time home brewer, Kurt also knows his way around the beer scene, so no matter your adult beverage of choice, he will be most happy to assist!

Susanne Drayer
Susanne Drayer

Susanne started drinking white Zinfandel with friends after college, but has since graduated (from both college and white Zins) to bigger and better things.

Married to husband Bob since 1981, one of her most special memories is of a wine tour to Greece in 2012, where they both toured wineries and vineyards on the island of Santorini.

An Iowa farm girl at heart, her leisure pursuits include Big 12 men’s basketball (go Cyclones!), gardening, cooking, entertaining, travel, reading, and walking/hiking. However, according to Susanne, her new favored activity has become trying new wines at her “dream job” with us here at WBJ®!

Daniel Havens
Daniel Havens

Jennifer and Don's son Daniel has, of course, been around the shoppe from the very beginning. As he has grown, so have his responsibilities: from the early days when his most important task was cleaning the cat litter box, to today's mature young man capable of handling most any job we throw at him.

Among Daniel's favorite wine memories are sleeping in the back seat of the car while Mom and Dad stopped at seemingly every Midwest tasting room they passed, and of chauffeurring these same incorrigible parents around Germany as they stopped at seemingly every tasting room they passed!

Steve Hultgren
Steve Hultgren

Steve comes by his interest in wine honestly, as he learned winemaking as a youngster helping his dad make wine at home, a practice he continued for many years on his own as an adult.

As with many wine aficionados, Steve also counts cooking as a passion, and believes every bottle of wine contains memories just waiting to happen, more than likely by sharing over a perfectly paired meal with friends.

Also a certified BBQ judge, Steve stays fit from all his food and wine activities by cycling every chance he gets.

Don Stanton
Don Stanton

While Don devotes the majority of his time at WBJ® to marketing and franchise development, his favorite role is reputed to be assisting Jennifer in wine "research and development." He has long been curator for our extensive craft beer and premium spirits programs, and also serves as a Beer Review Panelist for the trade publication, Beverage Dynamics.

Don is also a licensed real estate broker and commercial pilot. His leisure pursuits include fitness, hockey, butchering the French language, and traveling the globe in search of new and interesting adult beverages.

Brenda Stevens
Brenda Stevens

Brenda recently joined our Team after unofficially retiring from her real job a couple of years ago, and now considers Wines by Jennifer® her “happy place.”

Don't tell any of her four kids or three grandkids, but she was introduced to wine in high school by her best friend's mother, who drove them both around the Plaza with the T-tops out of her Firebird while they drank cheap wine and scoped out the scenery. Her appreciation for fine wine grew considerably, however, when she signed her husband Paul up for the WBJ® Wine Club for their anniversary several years ago.

When not at her Parkville “happy place,” Brenda can most likely be found relaxing with her family at their Lake of the Ozarks home.

Michelle Mose

Michelle Mose

Our newest Team Member, Michelle comes by her love of wine honestly, having been exposed to the fruits of the vine at an early age growing up in her wine-loving family. Like many oenophiles, she is happiest when sharing a glass with friends and family.

Michelle is also an avid traveler and animal lover, and can often be found volunteering in her spare time at KC Pet Project.

Al Szalay
Al Szalay

Al is a retired computer services engineer and has been working at Wines by Jennifer® since 2004, but he and his wife Teri have been loyal customers from the very beginning.

His contributions are many: dispensing wine knowledge in the Tasting Room, showing off his cooking talents at special events, displaying his beautiful woodturning pieces in our Art Gallery, and serving as a general handyman (check out his ingenious "art hanging system," also in our Art Gallery). He's even been known to provide an introductory lesson in Hungarian after a glass of wine or two!

Al's hobbies include woodturning and cooking (of course), tennis, travel, and brewing beer.

Teri Szalay
Teri Szalay

Teri was born and raised in New York and New Jersey and has been married to Al Szalay for over 40 years. She has been an integral member of the Wines by Jennifer® team almost from the beginning after retiring from 33 years in the corporate world with Trans World Airlines and American Century Investments.

Teri grew up in a German/Austrian home and was introduced to wine at a young age. She has been fortunate to travel extensively and visit many of the world's famous wine regions in person, and is always in the mood for a great Champagne.

In addition to traveling, Teri also enjoys tennis, cooking, and reading.

Pinot (shown here in one of his favorite poses) is the official mascot of Wines by Jennifer®. Although we can't recall the exact date he was hired, estimates have his first day on the job at the shoppe occurring sometime in 2004, when he appeared, appetite at the ready, on the front porch as a 7-cheese plate was being delivered to an unidentified (and unsuspecting) customer.

Cat (as he was first named) apparently liked what he saw and decided this was to be his new home. When he informed us that he wasn't particularly satisfied with the name originally bestowed upon him, we decided to have a "Name the Cat" contest with our Customers and Team, whereupon he soon became Pinot.

Nowadays, as CFO (Chief Feline Officer) of Wines by Jennifer®, his schedule, job description, and future plans can pretty much be described as "whatever the hell he wants."

Squatty - Best Dog Ever

In the early days of Wines by Jennifer®, our beloved dog Squatty was a fixture at the shoppe. Sadly, Squatty is no longer with us, but his story will live forever.
