July, 2007

Jennifer Stanton of Wines by JenniferHi everybody!

The dog days of summer are upon us, and with it, my white wine consumption is going up, up, up.

With that in mind, we "cooked" up a little promotion for those of you who, like me, need a little more white wine in your summer. Here it is:

Any Wine Club member that adds our white Wine Club selection of the month to their order for August, September, and October will receive a free Wines by Jennifer stone refrigerator magnet, plus a free guest admission to a Private Wine Club Event of their choice!

P.S. - Already getting white wines each month? Don't worry - you're still eligible. Just add another bottle to your order for three months to get your free gifts.

This special offer ends on July 31st, so don't delay - just call us at 816.505.WINE and mention the "White Wine Club Special" from the newsletter and we'll get you set up in no time.

Enjoy wine? Fun? Extra cash? If this describes you, we need to talk! Wines by Jennifer is seeking wine- and fun-loving individuals to fill part-time shifts at the shop. For more information, give us a call at 816.505.WINE.

Pinot's "Fun Wine Factoids"

Pinot - "The Official Feline of Wines by Jennifer"

  • Foot treading of grapes is still used in producing a small quantity of the best port wines.

  • In ancient Babylon, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (fermented honey beverage) he could drink for a month after the wedding. Because their calendar was lunar or moon-based, this period of free mead was called the "honey month," or what we now call the "honeymoon."

  • Thomas Jefferson helped stock the wine cellars of the first five U.S. presidents and was very partial to fine Bordeaux and Madeira.

  • There are about 400 species of oak, though only about 20 are used in making oak barrels. Of the trees that are used, only 5% are suitable for making high grade wine barrels. The average age of a French oak tree harvested for use in wine barrels is 170 years!

  • Cork was developed as a bottle closure in the late 17th century. It was only after this that bottles were lain down for aging, and the bottle shapes slowly changed from short and bulbous to tall and slender.

Wines by Jennifer Wine Trivia Contest

Submit the correct answer by July 31st and win a free wine tasting compliments of Wines by Jennifer. In the event of multiple correct answers, the winner will be chosen by random drawing.

What is meant by the term "Blanc de Noir"?

Congratulations to last month's winner, Bob Scheidhauer, who was chosen the winner from several correct respondents based upon the following answer:

"The term "Stelvin Enclosure" was coined not long ago when a WBJ Wine Club Member, Marty Stelvin, attempted to cut in front of another member, Bob Scheidhauer, to obtain the last glass of free pinot at a wine tasting.

Reports indicate that the rightfully disgruntled Mr. Scheidhauer promptly stuffed Mr. Stelvin into the now empty wine bottle and sealed it with a screw top, thus preventing any oxygen migration or TCA taint to occur.

Thus, a new era in wine enclosures began at Wines By Jennifer."

So much more entertaining than just saying "a screw top", don't you agree? Thanks, Bob, for making us laugh at loud and enjoy your free tasting!

Joe and Brenae Smith

The Smith FamilyThe Smiths are proud parents again and we're thrilled that they wasted no time introducing Cohen (held by his big bro, Hunter) to the gang at Wines by Jennifer!

Joe and Brenae have been among our very best customers literally from Day One. They are charter Wine Club members and are regulars at nearly all our special events.

They are truly champions of Wines by Jennifer as illustrated by the fact that Joe actually paid for several of his employees to attend our Wine 101 course with him, most of whom have gone on to become excellent customers themselves.

Joe also introduced his brother and sister to us and we now count them as loyal Wine Club members, too.

In short, we owe a great, big THANK YOU to Joe and Brenae, along with our congratulations on beautiful baby Cohen!

Dear Jennifer,

I just wanted to share my impression of your June white Wine Club pick, the Goldwater Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - WOW! I am even thinking it tops my all-time favorite, Kim Crawford! Such a fabulous choice. Thanks for sharing great finds with your club members! Iíll have to pick this one up again...

André Dominé

"Wine" by Andre DomineWith nearly 1,000 pages and weighing in at over eight pounds, this book seriously delivers the goods on wine for wine novices and experts alike.

Dominé begins with a long history of wine, then progresses through the basics of choosing, serving, tasting, and storing wine. From there, he takes the reader to the vineyard, exploring varietals, terroir, and cultivation; and to the winery, where he dissects the pressing, fermentation and aging processes.

The focus next shifts to the wine-producing regions of the world. Coverage of each region or country includes a historical overview, detailed growing maps, production details and statistics, and a selection of wine producers with samples of their labels.

Comprehensive, well-written and wonderfully illustrated, we highly recommend this beautiful tome as a worthy addition to any wine lover's library.
