September, 2007

Jennifer Stanton of Wines by JenniferWell, I hope that everybody has had a chance to catch their breath from the start of the new school year.

If not, may we suggest that you:

Play Hooky This Tuesday At Wines By Jennifer!

Some of you may have heard about an exciting new event called the "Tour of Missouri", a point-to-point stage race patterned after the famous Tour de France. What you may not have heard is that the Kansas City stage of the race on Tuesday, September 11th will be coming through our own beautiful downtown Parkville - not once, but twice!

As you probably know, we've never been ones to miss an opportunity to throw a party, so we cordially invite you to:

Tour of Missouri"Celebrate the Tour of Missouri with Wines by Jennifer"

While the cyclists will arrive in Parkville at approximately 1:30 PM on their way out and 3:00 PM on their way back, the party at Wines by Jennifer will start promptly at 12:00 PM and end, well, whenever you want it to end!

We'll have special cycling-themed wines and beers to mark the occasion, along with complementary picnic fare for you to enjoy throughout the day.

Any biking enthusiast or person remotely familiar with the Tour de France or races of this kind knows that the race is just a small part of the action. It's more like a rolling festival bringing together thousands of people for food, drink, and frivolity. So whether you're a hard-core cyclist, or your last bike had streamers, a banana seat, and cards in the spokes, this is one party you don't want to miss.

No RSVP required - just show up ready for fun!

Pinot's "Fun Wine Factoids"

"Pinot" - The Official Feline of Wines by Jennifer

  • “Cuvée” means “vat” or “tank” and is used to refer to a particular batch or blend.

  • "Still" wine is any wine without bubbles.

  • Labels were first put on wine bottles in the early 1700's, but it wasn’t until the 1860's that suitable glues were developed to hold them on the bottles.

  • Rose bushes are often planted at the end of a row of grape vines to act as an early warning signal for infestation by diseases and insects like aphids.

  • The auger or curly metal part of a corkscrew is sometimes called a worm.

Wines by Jennifer Featured Testimonial

Dear Jennifer,

I enjoyed browsing through the shop for a short while yesterday and look forward to your monthly selections as a member in the Wine Club.

I was so impressed, I mentioned your shop to a friend last night...I'm guessing she'll be dropping by one day soon.

By the way, I heard about your place from one of your Wine Club members who's installing my countertop.

Thanks,

Hank Palacios

(Submit a testimonial about your experience at Wines by Jennifer and if we select it for inclusion in a future newsletter, you'll win a complimentary wine tasting at Wines by Jennifer.)

"The Oxford Companion to Wine"

by Jancis Robinson

The Oxford Companion to WineHere is yet another excellent resource from one of the world's foremost wine authorities, Jancis Robinson.

"OK," you may ask, "why could I possibly need another wine reference book in my library?"

Excellent question!

The answer is that this reference book is quite unlike any other you may have seen. While it definitely provides all the usual information about varietals, regions, tasting, pairings, et al., it also explores several not-so-usual areas, such as:

      • The impact of animals on vines and wine
      • Wine auctions
      • The British influence on wine
      • Wine in literature, art, and fashion
      • Varietal genealogy

These are but a few of the less obvious aspects to wine that you will enjoy learning about from this book.

Highly recommended for the beginning and experienced wine drinkers alike, drop by your local bookstore and take a look at this one for yourself. You may just find yourself walking out with yet another wine reference book for your library!
