“Wines
to Spark Your 4th of July"
Week
of July 1st, 2008
- Vinho Verde, the most popular white wine of Portugal, is a deliciously
refreshing, light wine. "Verde" means "green" and
refers to the youth of these wines, but it could just as easily
refer to the lime color of this wine or the green lush area
where it is produced. The wines are fresh, crisp, and lively,
with just a touch of spritz. It is an ideal warm weather wine,
excellent for lunch and picnics or an evening apéritif.
This 2006 vintage makes a brilliant pairing with any fish,
shellfish or poultry.
- In French, “blanc de blanc” [blahnk-DUH-blahnk] means “white
of white(s).” It refers to a white wine made only from white
grapes such as Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc, and is most often
associated with elegant white sparkling wine or Champagne.
This particularly delicious non-vintage Finger Lakes sparkler
is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Enjoy at the start of
your
4th
of July
festivities.

Once known as a peasant wine, the Barbara grape has
grown to one of the most widely planted varietals
in the
Piemonte region of northwestern Italy. Today, Barbera
is one of the most exalted grapes of this rugged
mountain region. It arrived with Italian immigrants
to California in the 19th century and adapted well
to the coastal volcanic soils. When produced in low
yields and treated to barrel aging, it can make extremely
exciting wines. This 2004 from Mendocino has
a deep purple color with aromas and flavors of juicy
blackberries
and
raspberries with a hint of currant. Soft tannins
and a great natural acidity produce a wine for immediate
enjoyment or one that will age for many years. Excellent
when served with pizza, savory dishes, grilled Portobello
mushrooms and hard-aged cheese.
-
This 2003 Mendocino Rosso has a dark purple-garnet
color, with jammy aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries,
raspberries
and plums. Rich full flavors, ripe tannins and a
seamless balance carry through to the long, lingering
finish. This beautiful wine is perfect for immediate
enjoyment, but will also reward the patience of cellaring.
Excellent with grilled steak burgers!
-
You
can’t go wrong with a wine like this 2003 Chianti Classico
- it goes down smooth, is food-friendly, and offers a complete
package
of alluring
aromas
such as cherry, graphite, tobacco, chopped mint and licorice.
It has a medium consistency and a polished finish. Serve with
pastas, traditional ragù and grilled meat.

This
family estate vineyard and winery is nestled in
California's Temecula Valley. When the
family acquired the 20-acre winery
in 1996, their intentions were simple. They wanted
to run a fun, family business producing great wines
from the excellent climate and soil of the Temecula
Valley. Enticing and fragrant with aromas lodged between
marzipan and almond, the 2007 vintage
delivers exactly as advertised. Chill and serve with
a light dessert.
