"New Arrivals for the New Year"

(New wines and a few re-entering the Kansas City market)

Week of January 13th, 2009

White Wines

  • This single-vineyard Riesling Spatlese was late-harvested after an extended growing season in 2006, allowing the grapes to reach their peak ripeness. Produced from grapes grown on this renowned single vineyard site in Piesport, in Germany's Mosel-Saar-Ruwer district, it offers fresh pear and melon flavors with a touch of grapefruit on the finish. Excellent as an aperitif or with smoked ham, broiled seafood, and lighter fare.
  • This non-vintage sparkling is a combination of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) grapes grown in the Adige Valley of Northern Italy. It is hand harvested from estate vineyards and is produced in the “Metodo Classico” and adheres to the strict quality standards mandated by the “Trento DOC” guarantee. It is also bottle fermented for 18-24 months. This is a luminous brut sparkler with ripe melon, peach and toasted nutty notes that hit all the right marks. Nicely tart on the close with clean flavors and tight structure. Try this wine with a cold Dungeness crab with lemon and olive oil.
  • This 2006 vintage is one of the most delicious Pinot Grigio's we’ve tasted in awhile. It has lots of bright fruit flavors with delicately perfumed scents of flowers and spice, and also shows almond, tangerine and apricot fruits. Softly textured and balanced with a crisp citrus finish. From Trentino in Northern Italy, it's a delicious aperitif, or pair it with seafood and salads such as this week’s Special Appetizer.

    Red Wines

  • The wine underwent traditional red wine vinification at controlled temperatures of around 25°C. It aged briefly in oak barrels, which enriches its perfume and gives balance. This 2006 Pinot Noir from Veneto is garnet-red in color, with a pleasant bouquet of vanilla and cherry and delicate spice and dry on the palate. We found more vanilla and fresh cherry flavors on the finish with a slightly strawberry and cherry tart aftertaste. Excellent with lamb stew!
  • The winery is about seven kilometers from Greve in Chianti and sits about 470 meters above sea level. Its land extends over 190 hectares: 60 are planted with vineyards, five with olive trees, while the rest are woods, mostly of oak and chestnut trees. There is also a little fishing lake in the bottom of the valley; so in short, this is the ideally pastoral locale for producing wonderful Chianti! The 2006 vintage is made from a blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Trebbiano, and it performs extremely well, especially when paired with simple pastas or pizza!
  • This 2007 red compilation blends Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel juice from Mendocino County. Baked fruit flavors of cherry and berry are seamlessly integral to the rich, well-rounded appeal and fresh personality portrayed. Smoked nuances of charred oak adorn the supple interludes between dense submersions in tarry-ripe intensity. This wine is perfect with hearty soups, stews and meaty chili dishes.
