"Sauvignons & Syrahs from around the World"

Week of April 28th, 2009

Sauvignon Blancs

  • The vineyard is situated on a plateau overlooking the River Cher in Touraine, France and benefits from flint clay soils, which are perfect for the Sauvignon grape variety. Light and smooth on the palate with hints of citrus fruits and subtle, floral aromas of boxwood. Superb as an aperitif, but will also happily accompany charcuterie, seafood, and grilled or smoked fish. Drink this 2007 vintage now through 2010.
  • The winery's policy is to grow the various grape varieties where they perform best, whether from Company owned or contract grower sites. Crisp and refreshing, reverberating with aromas and flavors of citrus, gooseberry and passion fruit, with just a touch of herb on the lively finish, this 2007 from Marlborough is a quintessential New Zealand Sauvignon.
  • This 2006 Sauvignon Blanc is produced from grapes grown in Northern California’s Lake County, which has emerged since the 1960’s as one of California's most prestigious growing regions. Here, the soil types and microclimate around Clear Lake provide ideal growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc grapes. This elegant, medium-bodied wine is crisp and refreshing, with hints of citrus, apple, honey and melon flavors all blending into a smooth, silky, harmonious finish. It makes an ideal accompaniment for seafood, chicken, salads and vegetarian dishes.

Syrahs

  • The Paso Robles, California winery is located about three miles from the Pacific Ocean. This location is cool and mild in the summer months, causing the fruit to ripen later than the inland fruit, and the cooler, moist climate will produce more intense, darker color. This 2004 Syrah shows lots of earthy character, deep, dark roasted blackberry fruit, with dark loamy earth, smoked meats, toasted herbs, pepper spice and cocoa. Full-bodied and very rich!

  • This 2006 Shiraz from South Australia was aged for 15 months in seasoned American oak and bottled without fining or filtration. It offers a stylish bouquet for its humble price, featuring aromas of cedar, bacon, plum, and blueberry. This leads to a medium-bodied wine with good grip, intensity, and length. "Best Buy" by Parker's Wine Advocate.

  • This 2007 South African Shiraz is made from nine-year-old vines planted in alluvial soil and matured in French oak barrels for a period of eight months before minimal filtration and bottling. Dark ruby color. Smoky spices on the nose, with woody undertones and hints of dark berries. The palate is dense yet subtle, dry yet succulent. Vanilla and spices come through in the aftertaste. Very well integrated, with a hint of wood. Lingers pleasantly before fading gracefully.
