"Summertime 'Blues'"

Week of July 14th, 2009

Sparkling Wine

  • This small, charming, family-run winery makes beautiful handcrafted Proseccos from the heart of the Veneto. Made from 100% Prosecco di Valdobbiadene grapes, this non-vintage wine has a light straw color and very small and very dense bubbles. A touch of pear and melon in the aroma lights up this wine. It is crisp and clean with nice acidity and a refreshingly dry finish.
White Wines
  • This 2007 California Riesling was slowly cold-fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain all its varietal character and reserve a fresh, fruity style. It offers enticing, fragrant aromas of ripe fig and peaches accented by hints of citrus and lovely honeysuckle. On the graceful palate, the wine’s bright key lime pie and peach flavors are heightened by a refreshing minerality that lingers through the crisp finish. It pairs exquisitely well with spicy and ethnic cuisine.

  • The grapes for this 2007 Mendocino County Chardonnay are grown in the Redwood Valley north of Ukiah in a family-owned organic vineyard. The family has been growing organic grapes since the 1950’s. The vineyard typically produces lush, fruit forward wine. Typically, this Chardonnay shows citrus and mineral characteristics, with a hint of stone fruit flavors and bright acidity. The perfect pairing for this wine would be a poached rock fish drizzled with Mornay sauce and lightly buttered seasonal vegetables.
Red Wines
  • This non-vintage red blend from California shows aromas of raspberries, boysenberry and rhubarb, with a hint of zinfandel black pepper spice. Flavors of juicy ripe plum, rich blueberry and oak spice with touch of vanilla on the finish. Pairs well with steak, barbecued ribs or pizza, or enjoy a glass with your favorite pair of jeans.

  • Lemberger is sometimes referred to by its ancient name, Blau Frankisch, literally “blue grape from France.” The wine receives little or no oak aging. This 2007 vintage from Washington State is clean, crisp, and unpretentious with tons of fruit, including warm berry pie, complementing the traces of pepper, almond, cherry and cinnamon. It has soft tannins, medium body, great color and is the perfect red wine to enjoy over the summer with any festive occasion. It is excellent with appetizers, cheeses, BBQ, and picnics.

  • The intense color of blue with violet hues is characteristic of a complex, intense Bonarda. Fresh, light and quite fragrant, with floral aromas and rather spicy. Fresh blackberry on the palate, easy and light, with juicy mint flavors. Persistent flavors, with great body and presence in the mouth. Mild tannins and rounded finish. This 2005 from Mendoza sees no oak.
