"New Arrivals from France"

Week of November 3rd, 2009

Sparkling Wine

  • The French terms "Mousseux" or "Crémant" are used to refer to sparkling wine made in the Champagne method, but not in the Champagne region. This non-vintage Crémant de Bourgogne Brut from Chablis is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from clay and limestone soils. Aged for three years, this delicate and full-flavored non-vintage sparkling shows the fine aromas of Chardonnay and the power of Pinot Noir.
White Wines
  • This 2007 100% Chardonnay from Chablis is produced with grapes from vines with an average age of 35 years. A fresh, vivacious style, with intense floral aromas. A perfect balance, combining full, generous fruit flavors with finesse and elegance. Aged 6-10 months sur lee in stainless steel tanks.

  • This classic 2007 white Burgundy comes from the gently sloping hillside overlooking the ancient walled town of Beaune. White wine accounts for only 5% of the total production from this appellation. The soil in this region is made up of chalk and limestone that suits the Chardonnay well. The unique terroir and traditional oak cask aging produce a wine with an elegant bouquet that is rich and thick in body, displaying a generous, buttery fruit character. It is well balanced and has crisp acidity and a long finish. A clear and bright color with greenish-gold hints and a discreet nose of almonds and hazelnuts. On the palate, there is a freshness that melds with the almonds and hazelnuts, finishing in a lemony finale.

Red Wines

  • This 2007 Regnie Cru Beaujolais is a rich, garnet colored wine with a smoky, spicy nose. Light and juicy on the palate, without ever going over to the delicate side. There's lots of raspberry fruit with an underpinning of earth and a hint of leather. This wine doesn't cheat you on complexity or depth. Serious Beaujolais.

  • Marsannay is the northern gateway to the Côte d’Or and marks the beginning of the Burgundy "Route des Grand Crus" that follows the N6 highway through the Côte d’Or. The wines are renowned for being sturdy and robust due to the rich, iron-based soil. They have an intense bouquet of red fruit and a mouth-filling, silky palate with a distinct gamey character and great tannic appeal. Marsannay received its Appellation Contrôlée as recently as 1987 in recognition of the consistently high quality of its wine. The 2006 vintage has a nice garnet robe, an intense bouquet of red and black fruit, and a silky texture on the palate. It is robust with a good balance between tannins and acidity.

  • The domaine is located on the site of an ancient monastery in the Coteaux du Verdon at 500 meters above sea level, which guarantees sunshine during the summer months and limits the possibility of spring frosts. The grapes are entirely handpicked before being fermented in stainless steel open vats for a short period of 4-5 days. The 2007 vintage shows good Pinot aromas that focus on red fruit, with distinct nuances of smoke and meat. Fresh and bright flavors, light-bodied but crisp red fruit, and earthy notes that follow the nose. There's a wisp of tannins along with clean fruit in the finish.
