"Presidential Wines"

Week of February 21st, 2017

White Wines

  • Ever since migrating from Holland to France in 1679, the passion of winegrowing has been a centuries-old tradition for this family. This Picpoul de Pinet is crystal clear pale gold color, with light green reflections. Aromas of white peach, pineapple, and white roses lead to a lively palate with the same exotic fruits as presented in the nose.   • It was a decade in the works, but the Oak Knoll District was finally recognized as a distinct sub-appellation of Napa Valley in 2004. Oak Knoll's cooler climate is what distinguishes it from other Napa appellations. Light citrus peel on the nose leads to a beautifully woven palate full of Asian pear, fennel-like herb, and lemongrass. Thick, rich and nearly full-bodied, this Sauvignon Blanc is well balanced by its crisp, tangy finish.

Red Wines

  • For three generations, the family has been working their estate in the heart of Montepulciano’s Vino Nobile wine-growing area. This Rossa di Montepulciano is an intense ruby red color, with aromas of red fruit and berries. Very harmonious and pleasant flavors of red fruit with flowery undertones. Open one hour prior to serving alongside first courses, roasts, cold meats, and cheese.
  • From his days as a young boy working on a Midwest farm, the owner of this Napa Valley winery developed an interest and respect for agriculture and farming that grew into a life's passion and dream realized with his purchase of a 50-acre property in the Oak Knoll District in 2007. This Merlot is front-loaded with cherries, violets, red currants and mocha, with serious depth and length that suggest it will benefit from further careful cellaring.
  • Founded in 1993, this Colchagua winery was named “Best Chilean Wine Producer” at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London in 2002, and certified sustainable by Wines of Chile in 2011. This Syrah is deep ruby red with purple notes. Ripe and dense aromas of black cherry and black pepper, with touches of vanilla and toast. Bright, ripe tannins give structure to ample berry fruit nicely balanced with a touch of light toast. The long finish is full of refinement and grace.
  • Blended with a touch of Merlot and Malbec, this California Cabernet is an inky dark burgundy in the glass that hints at its density and depth. The nose is a bit shy at first, but a bit of air coaxes out a beguiling ripe, black cherry core paired with a subtle minerality and the sweet smokiness of charred French oak. The mouth is creamy and dense, with layers of juicy berries, dark chocolates, rich espresso, and black pepper. Well-balanced and drinking superbly in its youth, the patience of careful cellaring would also certainly reward.
