"Around the World in Six Wines"

Week of May 9th, 2017

White Wines

  • This Sauvignon Blanc comes from an exciting new Slovenian winery close to the Hungarian and Croatian borders founded by three friends in 2007. Filled with vibrant fruit aromas and flavors, with classic gooseberry and passionfruit leading the way.   • Although it is the 2nd-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia still remains a somewhat remote region with one of the smallest densities of people per square kilometer in Europe. This crisp white Vermentino kicks off with a light citrus nose with hints of apple. On the palate, it starts with fresh pear that leads to a palate-cleansing minerality. It finishes long and smooth, delightfully refreshing the palate for that next bite of stone crab or other shellfish.

Red Wines

  • The wine is a blend of Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from the illustrious Simonsberg appellation in Stellenbosch. Deep garnet in color, with aromas of red cherries, black current, fynbos (a native Western Cape shrub), and white pepper. Berries, cherries and fresh vanilla are evident on the palate, with an elegant, balanced mouthfeel and light, chalky tannins on the long, savory finish.
  • Like its cousin Barolo, Barbaresco DOCG wines are made from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the Langhe region of Piedmont. However, the most pronounced difference between the two wines is that the tannins of Barbaresco tend to soften quicker, which can make the wines more approachable to drink at an earlier age. This wine shows nice floral aromas, with flavor notes of cherry, truffles, and hints of fennel or licorice.
  • Named after a specific terroir in Costières-de-Nîmes covered by sandstones coming from glacial deposits, the wine is predominately Syrah, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and old-vine Carignan making up the final blend. Spicy red and black berry fruits are prominent, laced with a pleasing mineral touch. Juicy, long and fresh, it will perfectly match meat dishes such as duck, rib steak or game.
  • This is a family-owned and -operated boutique winery crafting small lot, premium wines in Lake County, California. This wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Barbera, and Petit Verdot. It fills your nose with blue berries and spice, with super texture and a voluptuous mouth feel of dark berry fruit and soft tannins on a full-bodied finish. Pair with grilled meats, pastas or smoked cheeses.
