Week of September 25th, 2018

White & Rosé Wines

  • The Central Coast region is famous for its premium stone fruit driven Chardonnay, with flavors of lemon zest, nectarines and pears and a firm backbone of acidity. This Chardonnay shows a brilliant yellow tone with green edges, combined with bright rich crème brûlée, Fuji apple and tropical notes. Pair with bay scallop chowder, fruited curry chicken salad, or crab cakes.
  • Fresh and dry with a light salmon pink color, the grapes for this Hawke's Bay rosé were harvested at optimum ripeness. Cabernet Franc was used, giving great flavor, fresh acidity and aromatics. De-stemmed grapes were transferred to a basket press, where a short period of soaking and light pressing was enough to color the juice pale pink. Clean juice was run off to a separate tank to ferment at cool temperatures to retain the fruit flavors and reduce phenolics or any bitterness. Try it with the “Roasted Garlic” recipe from our Wines by Jennifer® Cookbook!

Red Wines

  • This French Syrah/Grenache blend has a beautiful violet color with intensive brightness. The nose opens on notes of cherry, leather, and red fruit. Produced with fruit from vines averaging 30-years-old, it has a richness and depth that is sure to please!
  • Temperate days, cool nights and the well-drained soil of Paso Robles echo the growing conditions of Bordeaux, inspiring local winemakers to produce world class Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose features ripe cherry aromas followed by licorice and sweet oak. The layered palate features bright red fruits with a bold framework of structured tannins on the long finish. Pair with grilled meats served with hearty root vegetables or bold pasta dishes.
  • This South African blend of Cabernet and Shiraz has black currant and cherry fruit aromas that are balanced with exotic pepper spice and dusty earth notes. Smooth with a dry, lingering finish, it's perfect alongside some good ole KC BBQ.
  • This Mendoza winery uses all estate Malbec fruit for this wine. Ripe fruit and a savory notes, with just a touch of oak make this Malbec perfect with a savory seasoned steak, double-cut grilled pork chop, or exotic meats such as roast wild boar or lean bison.

September Featured Flight: Malbec Regions of Argentina

Argentina is currently the largest producer of Malbec in the world, and it is grown extensively in every wine region of the country, from Salta to Patagonia. Malbec expresses itself very well in regions with broad temperature ranges and calcareous, clayey or sandy soils such as those found at the foot of the Andes. These geographic and climatic features make Argentine Malbec stand out particularly for the quality of its tannins: sweet, silky and mouth-filling.

Salta (Northern Argentina)
The northern region of Salta is one with high altitude and plenty of sun. Malbec from this region expresses a unique personality: aromas of very ripe red and black fruits, black pepper and paprika, with a very solid structure of solid, sweet tannins. This Malbec is intense ruby red with great vivacity and violet notes. Red fresh fruits such as raspberry, strawberry and cherry combine with a spicy aroma given by the use of oak. This wine can be cellared up to four years.

Uco Valley, Mendoza (Central Argentina)
The province of Uco Valley is mountain-flanked in nearly every direction and dominated by miles upon miles of lush vineyards. The province harbors several of the country’s most highly reputed wineries, many of which offer biodynamic vineyards, award-winning architecture and design, and creative chef collaborations. Uco Valley dominates the country’s wine production, and their Malbecs are more elegant, with distinctive spicy and floral notes. This Malbec is a silky and delicate wine with wonderful depth of fruit and aromas of black fruits, black pepper, tangerine skin and flint. Superbly refined tannins deliver a sexy texture plus a bright and minerally finish.

Patagonia (Southern Argentina)
In Patagonia (Neuquén and Río Negro), the climate is slightly colder and altitudes are less extreme. This helps the grapes retain acidity, yielding wines with notes of ripe black fruits combined with a marked mineral tone. This Malbec is intense and bright red with violet tones. Aromas of red fruits, plums, and blueberries, with vanilla and some soft, spicy notes also present. Silky and ripe, this wine is fresh and balanced with an elegant and fruity finish.

Serve Malbec with leaner cuts of seasoned or spicy red meats, dark meat poultry, roasted pork, hard cheeses, charcuterie plates and the “Grilled Lamb Kabobs” from our Wines by Jennifer® Cookbook!
